Inter Miami enters its final Phase One match with three points after splitting its first two Leagues Cup contests. Miami opened the tournament with a 4-2 victory over Atlético de San Luis before suffering a 2-1 loss to CF Monterrey, leaving the Herons with work to do in the race to advance. The matchup carries even more importance with Miami sitting behind several MLS clubs in the Phase One table as the tournament approaches the knockout rounds.

Club León has been one of the strongest Liga MX teams in the tournament so far, taking six points from its first two matches. León defeated Nashville SC 1-0 in its opener before earning a 2-1 comeback victory over Orlando City, giving the Mexican side a perfect 2-0 record heading into Wednesday. Inter Miami will need a strong performance at home against a León team that has already proven it can beat MLS opposition, making this one of the biggest matches of the final Phase One slate.

Tottenham agree Romero transfer with Atletico Madrid

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of captain Cristian Romero in a deal worth €40 million (£34.1m).

According to The Athletic, the 28-year-old Argentina international has agreed personal terms with Atletico and will complete the move once he passes a medical. The deal will also give Tottenham a 15 per cent sell-on clause.

The transfer ends Romero’s five-year spell in north London, during which he made 123 Premier League appearances and helped Spurs win the Europa League in 2025.

Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta initially on loan in 2021 before the move was made permanent for a reported €53m in 2022. He was appointed club captain ahead of the 2025-26 season after signing a new contract through to 2029.

The defender’s future had been uncertain throughout the summer, with Atletico and Inter Milan among the clubs interested in signing him. Arsenal had also made enquiries, but Tottenham were unwilling to consider selling their captain to their north London rivals.

The Athletic had previously reported Atletico’s renewed interest in Romero, with the Spanish club now completing the move after negotiations with Spurs.

Tottenham have already strengthened their central defence this summer, signing Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52m and adding Marcos Senesi on a free transfer.

Romero’s departure, therefore, represents another significant change to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad as the Italian coach reshapes his defence.

Atletico, meanwhile, will add the World Cup finalist to Diego Simeone’s squad as they look to strengthen ahead of the new season.
