NEW YORK – The Detroit Tigers wasted another one.

Carson Benge singled up the middle, knocking in fellow rookie A.J. Ewing, as the New York Mets beat the Tigers in the 10th inning at Citi Field on Wednesday, May 13.

The Tigers wasted a tremendous pitching performance by left-hander Framber Valdez. They wasted a game where they played clean baseball for the most part. All because they couldn't get the big hit. They went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Add it all up and they wasted a chance to snap their losing funk. They have now lost 12 of 17 games.

The Tigers will end this three-game series on Wednesday afternoon (1:10 p.m. Detroit SportsNet), as right-hander Keider Montero is expected to start for the Tigers. Rain is in the forecast.

Framber Valdez has tremendous return

Welcome back, Framber Valdez.

After returning from a five-game suspension, Valdez had a strong performance against the Mets.

Valdez, who is the Tigers' ace with Tarik Skubal on the injured list, was suspended for intentionally beaning Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story. In that game, Valdez gave up three homers. “I felt pretty bad once I got the news because I had to stay away,” Valdez said through Tigers interpreter Carlos Guillen on Tuesday at Citi Field.

More than anything, the Tigers needed a quality start from him, after losing 11 of their last 16 games.

“I hope he understands how important he is to us to get back on track,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday.

That’s exactly what they got, as Valdez gave up just two runs off five hits, walked two and had seven strikeouts in 6⅔ innings, throwing 106 pitches.

Valdez left the game in the seventh inning with two on and two outs, as the Tigers held a 2-1 lead.

Hinch brought in Kyle Finnegan to face Bo Bichette. But it didn't work.

Bichette looped a ball that was just far enough to be out of the reach of second baseman Zach McKinstry, but not far enough for the outfielders to reach, as the Mets tied it up, 2-2.

But the Tigers got out of trouble on a wild play when Bichette tried to steal second. Catcher Dillon Dingler threw down and Zach Short caught the ball and fired home, as Dingler tagged out Benge at the plate on his own attempted steal.

It was clean execution, the kind of thing the Tigers had been missing.

Riley Greene comes through

The massive scoreboard in Citi Field flashed an interesting stat before the Tigers played the Mets.

It said that left-handed hitters were 2-for-23 against right-hander Christian Scott, starting the game for the Mets.

And it was like a challenge, which the Tigers gladly accepted.

The Tigers had a tremendous opportunity in the first inning after lefty Kevin McGonigle walked and Dingler doubled. A tremendous opportunity for lefty Riley Greene, who laced a shot over shortstop, driving in two runs.

Greene has now gotten on base in 23- traight games, his career high.

Dingler crushed it in the two hole

Hinch moved Dingler up to the No. 2 hole in the batting order and the catcher responded.

He had two hits, including a double and scored a run.

But he was also involved in a strange play.

In the seventh inning, Dingler had a tremendous at bat, fouling off six straight balls.

But he was called out on a pitch clock violation by home plate umpire Junior Valentine, who tried to make himself a big part of this game.

Tigers execute cleaner baseball

In the third inning, Valdez got exactly what he wanted.

He got Luis Torrens to hit a grounder to second. But it bounced just out of the reach of McKinstry.

Then, Benge did the same thing. He hit a grounder that bounced just out of McKinstry’s reach.

That put runners on first and third.

Hinch brought the infield in and Bichette hit a slow roller to Spencer Torkelson at first. Torkelson fielded it cleanly and decisively threw home, cutting down Torrens.

It was the kind of play that the Tigers had not been making.

“We address it every day,” Hinch said before the game. “We know haven't been a great defensive club. We know that we've made some mistakes. And quite honestly, I look at plays that aren't considered errors, that are still mistakes. And so, we address it every day. It's something that we know we need to be better at if we're going to win more games and play a cleaner brand of baseball.”

Valdez got out of trouble when Mark Vientos flew out to the center field warning track.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhopal, nearly half of the state will remain under heatwave conditions for the next four days.

Weather expected on Thursday 

An orange alert has been issued for Thursday in districts like Indore, Ujjain, Dhar, and Ratlam, warning of severe heatwave conditions. Warm night conditions are also expected in parts of Indore, Ujjain, and Dhar, meaning temperatures will remain high even at night. 

Hot winds are likely to blow across several districts, including Jhabua, Alirajpur, Barwani, Khargone, Khandwa, Burhanpur, Harda, Narmadapuram, Dewas, Sehore, Shajapur, Agar-Malwa, and Rajgarh.

What do meteorologists say?

Weather scientists said that the state will continue to experience intense heat for the next four days. The impact will be stronger in Indore and Ujjain divisions, where an orange alert has been issued. Heatwave warnings are also in place for Bhopal, Gwalior, and Jabalpur, with alerts likely to remain until May 17.

Other parts of the state, including Bhopal, Jabalpur, and Gwalior, will also witness intense heat. Temperatures in districts like Shajapur, Agar-Malwa, Neemuch, Mandsaur, Niwari, Bhind, Morena, Datia, Sheopur, Tikamgarh, and Chhatarpur may cross 44°C.

Temperature record 

On Wednesday, 12 cities recorded temperatures above 44°C. After Khajuraho, Ratlam (45.2°C) and Dhar (45°C) were among the hottest places. Shajapur recorded 44.7°C, Guna 44.6°C, Sheopur and Sagar 44.4°C, Khargone and Raisen 44.2°C, Khandwa 44.1°C, and Damoh 44°C.

Among the five major cities, Ujjain was the hottest at 44.7°C. Bhopal recorded 43.2°C, Indore 43.6°C, Gwalior 42°C, and Jabalpur 42.7°C.

Despite the heat, some areas also saw sudden weather changes. Rain was reported in Jabalpur and Seoni by evening, while hailstorms occurred in Pandhurna. Strong winds were also observed in several districts.

Weather in coming days

May 15: Heatwave spreads to more districts including Bhopal, Gwalior, Shivpuri, and Vidisha. Orange alert continues in Indore, Ujjain, Ratlam, Dhar, Jhabua, and Alirajpur.

May 16: Peak heat expected across most of the state, including Bhopal, Gwalior, Jabalpur, and Sagar divisions. Orange alert remains in Indore, Ujjain, Ratlam, Dhar, Jhabua, and Alirajpur.
