5 key numbers from Iowa football's 31-14 loss to Ohio State

IOWA CITY— The Iowa football team came up short in a 31-14 loss to Ohio State on Oct. 3.

The Hawkeyes hung with the Buckeyes early, trailing 10-6 after the first quarter and 17-6 at halftime. Ohio State then scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half to go up 31-6. Jeremy Hecklinski led Iowa on a TD drive in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit.

Here are a few key numbers that told the highs and lows of the game for the Hawkeyes, who are now 4-1 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten Conference.

67: Jeremy Hecklinski's passing yards

Let's start with a few positives. Hecklinski entered the game in the fourth quarter, completed all five of the passes he attempted for 67 yards to set up the Hawkeyes' only touchdown of the day on his first drive under center. He also completed the 2-point conversion pass to Reece Vander Zee.

4: Sacks for the Iowa defense

The Hawkeye defense swarmed Ohio State QB Julian Sayin four times, resulting in a loss of 29 yards.

39: Rushing yards for Iowa

Ohio State held Iowa to 1.9 yards per carry on Saturday. Kamari Moulton led the Hawkeyes with 27 yards on 11 carries. LJ Phillips had four carries for 16 yards.

206: Receiving yards for Jeremiah Smith

Iowa had no answer for the Buckeyes' star wide receiver. He caught 11 passes for an 18.7-yard average and two touchdowns.

44: Hank Brown's completion percentage

Brown struggled against the Buckeyes, completing only 12 of his 27 passes. He finished with 132 passing yards, no TDs, one interception and two sacks. Brown came out of the game in the fourth quarter after taking a few hard hits.

Jeremiah Smith ties Ohio State touchdown record | Buckeyes Wire

Jeremiah Smith continues to roll towards Ohio State immortality. Already the career record holder in receiving yards with 3,286, which includes 111 yards through one half at Iowa, he has now tied another prestigious record.

The Buckeyes forced a punt with under two minutes in the half and marched down the field against the Hawkeye defense. With 12 seconds left, Julian Sayin found Smith at the goal line, stretching the ball to break the plane for the score. It was touchdown No. 8 for Smith on the season, but bigger than that, it ties him with Chris Olave for career touchdowns at Ohio State with 36. One more and the record will be all his.

Smith was also just 10 receptions away from becoming the all-time leader in catches at Ohio State coming into the game against Iowa. He has already hauled in six receptions and stands just four catches from that record as well. We could see multiple records fall today in Iowa City.

The Buckeyes are up 17 - 6 over the Hawkeyes heading into the second half.
