The Pittsburgh Pirates had listed their starter for their series finale Wednesday, April 1, against the Cincinnati Reds as TBD, but updated probable pitchers list ace Paul Skenes scheduled to make the start against the Reds' Andrew Abbott.
In his first start of the 2026 season against the New York Mets, Skenes threw just 37 pitches, allowing five earned runs on four hits and walking two while recording just two outs in a loss.

Abbott impressed for the Reds on Opening Day, pitching six shutout innings.
Skenes' ERA in 29 innings against Cincinnati is 0.31. His WHIP is 0.793.
Skenes has allowed 21 hits and two walks with one hit-by-pitch while striking out 40 against the Reds. He has not allowed a home run.
Skenes dueled with the Reds' Hunter Greene for the first time on Sept. 22, 2024, at GABP. Skenes tossed five shutout innings, allowing two hits while striking out nine with no walks in the Pirates' 2-0 win.
Skenes was the top overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft. The Reds' Rhett Lowder was the seventh overall pick in that draft.
