CBC won't tell feds its plans for $150M in extra funding

· Toronto Sun

CBC may be getting an extra $150 million in federal funds added to their 2026 budget, but they aren’t telling Ottawa yet exactly how they plan to spend it, according to Blacklock’s Reporter .

Records show managers from the public broadcaster will not tell the Budget Office their plan for the increase in funding which raises their annual parliamentary grant to a record $1.6 billion this year.

“The Department of Canadian Heritage requested the information you seek from the CBC,” Heritage Minister Marc Miller said in a budget analysis.

“The corporation is unable to provide the information at this time because these funds have not yet been received and remain unallocated.”

In a March 2 letter, the Budget Office requested “a breakdown of the $150 million,” but none of its questions were answered.

Analysts wondered, among other things, how much would be spent on improving digital platforms, French-language TV and radio, and what was going directly to CBC .

PM promised funding increase in April 2025 campaign speech

Prime Minister Mark Carney promised the increase in an April 4, 2025, campaign speech calling CBC “the most important of Canadian institutions,” adding any budget cut “is an attack on our Canadian identity.”

Liberal, BQ and NDP MPS on the Commons heritage committee in a 2024 report Future Of CBC all supported the funding increase.

However, Conservatives in a dissenting report said the public broadcaster should be defunded.

Conservative MP Kevin Waugh (Saskatoon South), a heritage committee member, said, “The CBC cut hundreds of jobs while awarding lavish bonuses. This disgraceful abuse of taxpayer dollars when Canadians are struggling for financial survival has contributed to the ‘defund the CBC ’ movement.”
